If you suffer from pain around your jaw then the cause may be temporomandibular joint pain, or TMJ pain. This is a very common ailment that affects up to 20% of people in the United States of America , with the vast majority being women in the early stages of middle aged.
The pain is caused generally by a misalignment between the teeth, causing the massive pressures exerted by the human jaw to be routed on to surfaces and tendons that aren't designed for it. This can cause pain that starts as a dull ache but can quickly become irritating and disturbing. Almost every time you swallow or chew you are using the TMJ joint, meaning that if there is a slight misalignment it does not take very long for TMJ pain to appear. Other areas connected to the trigeminal nerve are the sinuses, ear canal, oral cavity and teeth, meaning that if you are a TMJ pain sufferer that you might suffer pain in these areas as well.
There are a wide array of symptoms of the disorder but most of these are often put down to issues separate to your jaw. They can include headaches, ringing in the ears and earache, which can have many causes, so most people, including doctors, would not immediately point to TMJ pain as a possible cause.
Treatments for the condition are often very in depth and are based around the idea of the body as a series of interconnecting, interdependent systems. For further information regarding cosmetic dentistry, click here
